Team News & Tactics
Liverpool

The first match of the season gave way to news of a possible proportion of disaster, with Alisson Becker suffering a calf injury against Norwich City. Liverpool are now set to be without their first choice goalkeeper for "a few weeks" and Jurgen Klopp must now rely on Adrian's summer arrival for the foreseeable future.

After making his debut at Liverpool last Friday, the Spaniard will now have a big responsibility on his shoulders. As for the reserves, Caoimhin Kelleher could be an option, but it has been reported that Andy Lonergan, who is part of the Merseyside club's pre-season tour to the US, can sign a short-term contract and take a place on the bench against Chelsea.

In spite of the forced goal changes, Klopp can make several matches to keep his men fresh. One of the changes is expected to be made at the back, where Joel Matip can join Joe Gomez, to partner with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool's defense.

As for the full-back slot, no one has seen the past of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson on both sides, with the duo making a good start to the season. As usual, Alexander-Arnold and Robertson will be assigned to provide width, allowing midfielders and attackers to overload the central area.

Up front in midfield, Fabinho is likely to retain his position as Liverpool's holding midfielder. But, Georginio Wijnaldum could give way to James Milner, although Jordan Henderson is expected to be defended in the starting lineup. Milner will be in charge of the set-piece for Liverpool and will try to make the right delivery to test the vulnerable Chelsea defense.

In advance, the frightening trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino can be reunited for the first time this season, despite the recent heroism of Divock Origi. The aim of starting each of the three superstars is to ensure a quick win over Chelsea before giving them an initial breath, given this weekend's league match against Southampton.

Possible composition of players (4-3-3): Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Milner; Wrong, Firmino, Mane.

Chelsea

While Jurgen Klopp was greeted with bad news last weekend, for Frank Lampard the news was only good, at least on the injury front. N'Golo Kante ignored a knee injury to make it easier to act in the second half against Manchester United. Willian also returned after fully recovering from a hamstring injury which has kept him out since the Copa America.

The Brazil international has traveled with troops to Istanbul and is in line to return to action against Liverpool. But, Willian is not possible to make the starting lineup and is only expected to be slowly induced back to the side, as was the case with Kante last weekend.

Speaking of Kante, the persistent Frenchman must be fit enough to face Liverpool from the start and will partner with Jorginho on Chelsea's double-axis midfield. Behind them, the defense could do with the good news after the horror show at Old Trafford.

Antonio Rudiger edged closer to his return to action after placing a long-term knee injury behind him. However, the UEFA Super Cup contest has come too soon for Germany, which means Kurt Zouma, one of the players guilty of Sunday's disaster, will maintain his position at the heart of Chelsea's defense with Andreas Christensen.

Cesar Azpilicueta will likely be retained at right-back as well, while Emerson Palmieri will get his place on the left after being one of the few players who seem to lose. As for the attacks, replacing Willian, Pedro is expected to continue. But, on the opposite side, Christian Pulisic must make his full debut, replacing Ross Barkley.

Barkley's absence from the initial lineup means the impressive Mason Mount will retain its place in the hole. The young Englishman will be responsible for most of the set pieces and will try to provide a creative boost against Liverpool's rather shaky defense. In advance, European League's top scorer last season Olivier Giroud had to replace Tammy Abraham.

Possible Line-up (4-2-3-1): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Christensen, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho; Pedro, Mount, Pulisic; Giroud.

Preview

Despite his empathetic score, Jurgen Klopp's men were not fully convincing in their 4-1 win over Norwich - allowing their newly promoted opponents to have a number of surprising opportunities.

In contrast, the Blues are far from the ugliness shown by their 4-0 defeat against United, missing some good chances while making a number of fundamental mistakes at the back.

Prediction

Both performances mean goalmouth action is unlikely to be hard on Wednesday, with a 21/20 chance (2.05) worth supporting on both teams getting targets in a game that produces at least three goals.
